Lower School

Lower School Curriculum for Grades K-7
Under the direction of Cantor David Wolff, we are teaching with a spiral curriculum, where the same essential Jewish topics are taught each year, in different, age-appropriate ways. As your child re-encounters these topics each year, he/she/they will gain broader experience and understanding of these topics. The essential topics this year are Shabbat, Yom Kippur (Repentance), Passover (the Exodus story), the Creation story, Israel, prayer, and Tikkun Olam /social justice. In addition, B’nai Mitzvah students prepare with Rav Blumberg, Cantor Wolff, and our talented teens to ensure they are ready for their Bar or Bat Mitzvah.

Our themes for each grade are as follows:

  • Grades K-2: This year, the learning in Leah Kapiloff’s classroom will be thematically enriched with Jewish values. While the essential Jewish topics (above) will be the focus of the classroom, some lessons will be approached through the lens of Jewish values, such as love (Ahava – אהבה) and justice. (צדק – Tzedek).
  • Grades 3 and 4: This year, the learning in Elyse Blau’s classroom will be thematically enriched with the natural world. While the essential Jewish topics (above) will be the focus of the classroom, some lessons will be approached through the lens of the natural world.
  • Grade 5: This year, the learning in Sam Frydman’s classroom will be thematically enriched with the arts. While the essential Jewish topics (above) will be the focus of the classroom, some lessons will be approached through the lens of the arts.
  • Grades 6 and 7: This year, the learning in Illona Roll’s classroom will be thematically enriched with STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). While the essential Jewish topics (above) will be the focus of the classroom, some lessons will be approached through the lens of STEM.
